Welcome to Bats and Badges
Thanks to our partnership with the Wichita Metro Crime Commission and its executive director, Sharon Van Horn, we have been able to foster a wonderful relationship with local law enforcement personnel and first responders.
Connecting Kids and First Responders
It is important, we believe, for law enforcement to build positive and fun relationships with kids. And we have a lot of kids who are benefitting from this relationship with several events throughout the year.
We’re thankful to Captain Travis Rakestraw from the Wichita Police Department North Patrol Division for being a member of our board of directors and for spearheading many of our efforts with law enforcement personnel. We have an annual Kickapalooza event at McAdams Park, during which area police officers, fire department personnel and others participate in kickball with League 42 players.
We also have an annual event at the Arcade in Wichita, where our kids participate in video games, pinball, and other arcade activities alongside law enforcement personnel. And our Halloween event at the Sedgwick County Zoo, which happens to coincide with the Zoo’s Wild Lights display, is one of the highlights of our year.
This initiative is important so that strong relationships built on trust and comfort can thrive between police and young kids who grow up in at-risk atmospheres.
